Only Use A Fire Extinguisher If...

Fires are dangerous and extremely unpredictable. It is easy to become anxious during a fire, losing control over the situation.

Luckily, we now have disaster technology specifically designed to combat these situations, such as fire extinguishers and water hoses. It is important that we know exactly how and when to use them in an emergency.

Here are a few tips to follow when using a fire extinguisher to prevent further damage to your home.

Only Use A Fire Extinguisher If...

  • The fire is contained in a small area, such as a waste basket, and is not growing.
  • Everyone has exited the building. Fire extinguishers are messy and spray to cover a large area. Dry chemical fire extinguishers are tanks of foam or dry powder that puts out a layer of powder or foam, smothering the fire.If this foam is sprayed prematurely, an obstruction will be created and it will make it difficult for people to escape.
  • The fire department has been called and the room is not filled with smoke. You want to be sure that they will be arriving soon so you do not create a larger obstruction and your family can safely view and access the escape route.

If your home or office is suffering from fire or smoke damage call your local SERVPRO of Rockingham and Augusta Counties at (540) 433-6100.
